ART Situacions, the patronage project that has been promoting the dissemination of the youngest sector of contemporary art for over a decade, begins the tour of its third exhibition, ART Situacions III, in France, specifically at the Fondation Fiminco, where it will remain on view from February 29 to April 7, 2024.
When Mr. Pascual and the Art Situacions team considered the idea of presenting this project in France, Fondation Fiminco was one of the first institutions approached as the values and missions of both projects are aligned: Supporting contemporary creation and access for culture to all. Fondation Fiminco has been providing since 2017 residencies, productions facilities and visibility of emerging artists, making their work available to a broader audience, activities and goals that are aligned with the production of itinerant shows of young artist across Europe thar Art Sitaucions has been doing in the past decade. Your facilities and exhibition spaces at Romainville would be ideal for the language, topics and means used by the artists selected for this third edition as they represent the current transformation of our landscape, cities and societies as we approach the first quarter of the XXI century.
The exhibition will bring together the work of five Spanish artists and five emerging French artists. For this edition, Spanish artists Elena Aitzkoa, Nora Aurrekoetxea, Lucía Bayón, Aleix Plademunt and Pablo Capitán del Río will be working alongside French artists Salomé Chatriot, Marie-Luce Nadal, Benoît Piéron, Elsa Brès and Yoan Sorin. They have all been selected by an international recognised committee made up of María de Corral, Lorena Martínez de Corral, Chus Martínez and Vicent Todolí.
The ART Situacions project funded the production of a total of 10 new works created specifically for the occasion, which will be exhibited together with a selection of other representative pieces from the artists.
The stage design of the exhibition space is by Olga Subirós, an architect who has previously worked on setting up exhibitions in museums such as MACBA or Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. In addition, ART Situacions III is coupled with a book published by Turner whose common thread is a text by Chus Martínez. “The artists under focus make up an eclectic group, both formally and materially speaking, which seeks to address the need for tenderness and care, as well as a new love for life,” says Martínez.
Starting on February 29, the exhibition, which had its first stop at IFEMA Madrid during ARCOmadrid and subsequently traveled to Barcelona, will be visible in France throughout the month of March and until April 7 with the mission of supporting culture and the participating artists.
A project of patronage and passion for art
Keenly aware of the lack of opportunities for young artists working today, ART Situacions, a project driven by the personal desire of the husband-and-wife team of Catalan collectors Pilar Forcada and Marcel Pascual to inject new energy into the art scene, was created in 2011 to promote emerging art through funding for new production. As a result, two editions have already been held. The first in 2012 with Portugal as the invited guest country, featuring the participation of Spanish artists Patricia Dauder, Pepe Cifuentes, Francesc Ruiz, Juan López Díez, Miki Leal, Jaime de la Jara, Santiago Giralda and Nuria Fuster alongside the Portuguese artists Mauro Cerqueira and Carla Filipe. The second was held in 2016 with the Italian artists Ludovica Carbotta, Gabriele de Santis, Anna Franceschini, Diego Marcon and Alek O. and the Spaniards Miren Doiz, José Guerrero, Rubén Guerrero, Teresa Solar Abboud and Anna Talens.
After the passing of Pilar Forcada in 2021, her husband Marcel Pascual, collector and general director of Honda-Greens, took over at the helm of ART Situacions with the desire to continue the project in memory of his wife and their shared passion for art. “For almost half a century together we built an eclectic and diverse collection that combined the work of recognized artists and emerging new talents,” says Marcel Pascual. “It has given us great joy to have contributed with our support so that a good handful of artists have been able to dedicate themselves exclusively to their work.”
In addition, between 2017 and 2022 ART Situacions organized the annual ART Situacions ARCOmadrid award for the best emerging work of art at the fair. Its winners have been: Antonio Ballester Moreno (2017), Carlos Irijalba (2018), Patricia Gómez and María Jesús González (2019), Asunción Molinos Gordo (2020) and Irma Álvarez-Laviada (2022).
About Fondation Fiminco
Since its opening in 2019, the Fondation Fiminco has sought to be a multi-disciplinary meeting place for research and creation, open to all. Taking over a former industrial wasteland in Romainville, this site has been designed with artists in mind, providing an environment conducive to contemporary creation.
Committed to the Seine-Saint-Denis region in the heart of Greater Paris, the Fondation Fiminco has been undertaking ambitious projects in collaboration with cultural institutions for several years. By inviting them to take possession of its exhibition space, it is helping to create a new dynamic on the Paris cultural scene. Today, the Fondation Fiminco is opening up to new perspectives through partnerships with international institutions.
As Marcel Pascual, director of ART Situacions, rightly points out, “the Spanish Royal Academy defines ‘patronage’ as ‘the protection of or support for a cultural, artistic or scientific activity’. In all cases, a distinction must be made between ‘patronage’, in which the sponsor seeks a specific return on investment, and ‘sponsorship’, which is more a question of generosity and the sponsor’s sense of philanthropy”. The Fondation Fiminco is delighted to welcome the third instalment of ART Situacions III to its premises.
